How To Create A Minimalist Wardrobe: staple pieces

Minimalist Wardrobe Checklist Vol.1

When I started leaning towards minimalism, I didn’t know that such a concept existed. In the beginning, it was about making my life easier by restraining my wardrobe options. I would always end up wearing the same pieces styled differently anyways. Realizing that, I started googling “wardrobe basics”. Boom! Google put a name on it: minimalist wardrobe. Hurray! I was not alone, and that thing I was trying to do had a name. Which meant it was a lot deeper than what I thought. I’ll dive deeper into it in a future post.
If you are reading this article, you are most likely at the beginning stages of a more minimalist wardrobe, and you may not know where to start. So I’ll give you the formula I’ve used, which you can customize as you wish. This post will focus on staple pieces. The good thing is that you probably already have most of them, ha!

We will use what I call : “The triple rule”. You’ll understand its definition below.

“The good thing is that you probably already have most of them, ha!”

Long sleeved Shirts and T-Shirts

I suggest starting with at least 3. In my journey, I started by focusing on the darkest shade of the minimalist color palette. It is obviously much easier to style. Here are some suggestions, which you can adjust depending on where you want to go color-wise. My favorite brand for these pieces is GAP. Quality/Price ratio = a solid 8.5/10.

When it comes to outerwear, it is essential to take seasons into account. There’s nothing more irritating than being cold or too hot for me. That’s when layering comes into play. Instead of buying a new sweater, I’ll use the items above, add one piece to it and rotate them (ie. Monday: white shirt + a blazer; Tuesday: White shirt; Wednesday: grey shirt + blazer etc…). Applying The Triple Rule, I chose to invest in a good winter coat (Canada is cold as I don’t know what), a blazer, and cardigan.

Thus far, I intentionally left dresses out of the equation. I choose to dedicate a future blog post to it instead. Therefore, still applying The Triple Rule, I decided to purchase: a pair of black high-rise skinny stretchy jeans, a pair of grey high-rise skinny stretchy jeans, and a pair of blue jeans. High-rise jeans or pants offer so much versatility: tuck your shirt in your jeans, and you have a totally different look, ha!

I hope this helped! I tried to make it as simple and straight forward as possible. That’s what minimalism is. Simplifying my wardrobe has been a: time saver, stress reliever, financial savior, and more.

Much love,
